What Is Award Interpretation?

Getting pay right is a core responsibility for new employers. Fair Work Australia administers 122 awards that define wages and conditions, and a single workplace may need to follow more than one depending on job types.

Award interpretation refers to working out the lawful minimum pay an employee must receive under an Award or Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA). It takes into account:

  • Base pay: minimum hourly rate for ordinary hours
  • Overtime and penalties: higher rates for Sundays, public holidays, or late shifts
  • Allowances: compensation for expenses or conditions (e.g. meals, travel, uniforms, accommodation)

Whether staff are full-time, part-time or casual, they’re usually covered by an Award. Some businesses instead operate under an EBA, which can override the Award, but interpreting those rules is still part of the award interpretation process.

Can I keep using my timesheet system?

Yes. ClockOn supports timesheet imports from external systems via CSV if you’re not ready to switch. However, most customers move to our built-in time and attendance tools to reduce manual handling and improve payroll accuracy.

What if I don’t have someone to run payroll in-house?

No problem. You can use our optional Outsourced Payroll Service (OPS), where our Australian-based experts run payroll for you - while you still benefit from the full software features and reporting access.
