FAQs for Accountants, Bookkeepers and Agents

No, with ClockOn this process happens automatically. When you submit your first STP  the ATO can recognise the source of the STP submission from the ABN that you will enter inside ClockOn.

Yes, we're a popular choice for accountants and bookkeepers. Our web software can report STP for more than one entity. If you're reporting STP data for more than one entity, you will have a single sign-on and inside your software you will have a dropdown list showing all of your clients. You can simply select the entity you want to report STP for then repeat for your other clients.

You are required to report payroll information to the ATO in line with your pay cycle. For example, if you pay your employees weekly, you should report your STP weekly.

Submitting STP quarterly will only be available to micro employers who meet certain eligibility requirements. Please check ATO guidelines as to whether your business meets these criteria.

Yes, we recognise that many businesses just want to report the minimum required information to satisfy the ATO requirements. With ClockOn you can manually enter gross, tax and super for each employee and send it to the ATO.

Single Touch Payroll (STP) is an Australian Taxation Office (ATO) compliance regulation that requires every employer to upload their employees’ payroll information to the ATO during each payroll cycle, regardless of whether you pay them weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

You can review the inclusions and limitations here. To remove all limitations, you can upgrade your software from just $2 per employee (minimum charge of $10/month applicable).

One of the main benefits of STP is that it helps employers to streamline their reporting process to the ATO. Since information will be already provided after each pay cycle, the ATO will pre-fill PAYG sections of the business activity statement (BAS) on behalf of the employer which will eliminate the risk of errors and double handling. Further, new employees can also lodge their Tax File Number Declaration and Super Choice Forms through STP software.

STP exemption are applicable to a particular financial year or certain types of employers. Small employers having a withholding payer number (WPN) are also exempted from STP reporting for financial years 2018–19 to 2021–22. All remaining ABN holders with employees on the payroll have to report through single touch payroll software.

As per the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), STP is a mandatory obligation that all employers have to adhere to. Please discuss you circumstances with the ATO if you think you may qualify for an exemption.

STP reporting started on 1 July 2018 for employers with 20 or more employees and on 1 July 2019 for employers with 19 or fewer employees. After 1 July 2021, all types of employers and businesses holding an ABN will have to report the payroll information through ATO-approved Single Touch Payroll software such as ClockOn.
